Everything you need to know about Jim Butcher and his creation The Dresden files!
Jim Butcher is the author of the Dresden Files, the Codex Alera, and a new steampunk series, the Cinder Spires. His resume includes a laundry list of skills which were useful a couple of centuries ago, and he plays guitar quite badly. An avid gamer, he plays tabletop games in varying systems, a variety of video games on PC and console, and LARPs whenever he can make time for it. Jim currently resides mostly inside his own head, but his head can generally be found in the mountains outside Denver, Colorado.
Jim goes by the moniker Longshot in a number of online locales. He came by this name in the early 1990’s when he decided he would become a published author. Usually only 3 in 1000 who make such an attempt actually manage to become published; of those, only 1 in 10 make enough money to call it a living. The sale of a second series was the breakthrough that let him beat the long odds against attaining a career as a novelist.
So that, in this article, we are going to find out more about this men!
Who is Jim Butcher?
Butcher was born on October 26, 1971 in Independence, Missouri. He is the youngest in the family with two older sisters. He currently resides in his hometown.
Butcher developed a keen interest in fantasy and science fiction novels in his childhood. It was when he was ill his sister would bring him reading materials like The Han Solo Adventures and The Lord of the Rings so he wouldn’t get bored.
At the young age of 19, Butcher wrote his first novel but it felt unsatisfactory to him so he wrote two more novels which again failed to live up to the standards. The writing process of these three novels gave him some experience so that he would rewrite the first novel. This is how he created his notable Harry Dresden character in Dresden Files. These early novels were part of his writing class project.
Dresden Files series
The history of creating the first book on Dresden shows how difficult a writer’s first steps on the path to success can be. Butcher’s first works were written under the influence of the creative work of J. R. R. Tolkien and Lewis Carroll as a teenager, but all attempts to publish them failed.
In the world of The Dresden Files, magic — as well as vampires, demons, spirits, faeries, werewolves, outsiders, and other monsters — is real, and while the supernatural is still discredited, it is practiced by some members of society. And, large portions of the globe (such as much of Central and South America) are mentioned as being largely under the control of supernatural factions. The White Council is an organization of human wizards, noted to wield significant economic power in the world, along with their supernatural power. Each species in the series (humans, faeries, vampires, etc.) has its own political and societal rules and organizations. The human wizards depend on the White Council, while faeries may belong to either of two Faerie Courts, or none at all. Vampires may belong to any of four vampire courts.
Harry Dresden works as the world’s only “consulting wizard”, accepting supernatural cases from both human and nonhuman clients, as well as the Chicago PD’s Special Investigation unit. As the series progresses, Dresden takes on an increasingly important role in the supernatural world at large, as he works to protect the general public, making getting by as a working wizard and private investigator difficult for him. He finds himself facing off against an increasing variety of creatures (including other wizards), while facing the realization that his various cases may all be tied together behind the scenes and that his role might be even greater than he is willing to admit.
